The CSU One Health Institute funds Student One Health research projects annually, beginning in 2024. The One Health Institute works to provide research opportunities and programs for emerging leaders in the transdisciplinary One Health field.
2024 One Health Student Awards
The CSU One Health Institute funded four Student One Health Award projects for the first time in 2024. These awards support student research to implement a One Health project that addresses an issue at the interface of humans, animals, plants and the environment.
These student awards will support student research projects toward their degree and provide students with experience writing, managing and reviewing grants. Students who succeed in this funding period will review awards submitted the following year.
2024 One Health in Communities Course
In Larimer County, Colorado, the summer of 2023 saw an alarming increase in horses and people with West Nile Virus cases. Fifty-one cases were reported in people, seventeen of which were severe and included neurologic disease, and the County attributed eleven deaths to West Nile Virus infection. The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, continues to pose a serious threat to the community. Amid this continuous health concern, CSU’s One Health Institute focused its graduate-level course, One Health in Communities, on addressing West Nile Virus prevalence and raising awareness in the City of Fort Collins.
2024 Handprint Challenge
Undergraduate students across CSU competed in 2024 to offer solutions to the environmental wicked problem of human-carnivore coexistence in agricultural landscapes.
In its inaugural year, the Handprint Challenge competition was hosted by CSU’s Center for Human Carnivore Coexistence in collaboration with the One Health Institute. The event was supported by the Warner College of Natural Resources Dean’s Award for Transdisciplinary Approaches to Environmental Wicked Problems.
2024 Mini-Grant Challenge
The One Health Institute’s Mini-Grant Challenge in collaboration with the USDA-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services Department of Veterinary Services funded five student projects in 2024. These awarded projects highlight One Health solution-oriented approaches to emerging disease threats that also demonstrate clear potential to inform preparedness and response for African Swine Fever (ASF).
2020 Summer Program
During summer 2020, Colorado State University’s One Health Institute partnered with PetSmart Charities, the University of Alaska, and the Veterinary Summer Scholars Program (VSSP) to sponsor a One Health Summer Program for interested and motivated veterinary students.
The 8 week summer program resulted from strong faculty and student interest in making a difference for people, animals, and the environment.
Twelve inspiring veterinary students were selected to work on One Health projects in three impactful areas: Climate Variability, Inclusive Health Collaborative (IHC), and COVID-19.
