A student-organized virtual symposium on climate change for the veterinary profession. This symposium is designed to begin equipping clinicians, technicians and students in the veterinary field with knowledge and tools to be effective contributors in protecting animal health in a changing climate. CSU’s One Health Club is organizing an incredible program that we are excited to share with our community. Learn more on the Facebook page!
About the Conference
Students at Colorado State University and beyond are concerned about the impact of climate change on animal health. In a recent survey of veterinary students respondents report that education on this topic either did not exist or the students were unaware of its existence within their program. Veterinary students also felt veterinarians have a responsibility to be leaders in addressing climate change, especially through sustainable business practices. A subsequent study demonstrated that veterinarians share students’ belief of climate change and its health impacts and agree the profession should have an advocacy role. Additionally, veterinarians reported having no training or educational opportunities within the curriculum or offered through continuing education, despite client expectation that veterinarians possess knowledge and training on the health impacts climate change will have on their pets. The biggest takeaway from the combined research is that the veterinary profession should be a leader in addressing climate change, yet are largely lacking training on this topic despite a desire from the profession and an expectation from our clients.
One Health
This symposium is designed to begin equipping clinicians, technicians and students in the veterinary field with knowledge and tools to be effective contributors in protecting animal health in a changing climate. From an interdisciplinary One Health perspective, climate change as it relates to animal health will be explored through the lens of emerging disease, conservation implications, emergency management, veterinary care, and sustainable business initiatives. Attendees can engage with top scientists, advocates, and veterinarians leading the charge towards a healthier future for our planet and learn about actions needed to do join the force.
Symposium Features
In an effort to conserve the elements attendees experience from an in-person event, we have created this website to serve as a central hub for the symposium. Please be sure to check out the Student Showcase that highlights the efforts of students promoting animal health in a changing climate. The Exhibit Hall features sustainability efforts from corporate sponsors!
Student Showcase. Call for Abstracts
Are you a student or student organization who has advocated for animals in a changing climate? Maybe you fostered communication, conducted research, are active in advocacy and policy, implemented sustainable initiatives at your school or workplace, or have done some other action that has created movement towards a healthier planet. Whatever it may be, we want to showcase what students are doing to forge a more sustainable future in the face of climate change. We are currently accepting abstracts for the student showcase. Accepted projects will be showcased on the conference website and a select few will be featured during the conference. Although we welcome traditional research posters, we would like to encourage you to think outside the box for project submissions and get creative!
The team has been inspired by the amazing project submissions we have received that we decided to extend the deadline for accepting abstracts until March 15th, 2021! Please note final project submissions will be due April 1st, 2021.
