About the Conference

Students at Colorado State University and beyond are concerned about the impact of climate change on animal health. In a recent survey of veterinary students respondents report that education on this topic either did not exist or the students were unaware of its existence within their program. Veterinary students also felt veterinarians have a responsibility to be leaders in addressing climate change, especially through sustainable business practices. A subsequent study demonstrated that veterinarians share students’ belief of climate change and its health impacts and agree the profession should have an advocacy role. Additionally, veterinarians reported having no training or educational opportunities within the curriculum or offered through continuing education, despite client expectation that veterinarians possess knowledge and training on the health impacts climate change will have on their pets. The biggest takeaway from the combined research is that the veterinary profession should be a leader in addressing climate change, yet are largely lacking training on this topic despite a desire from the profession and an expectation from our clients.
