Clinical and Translational Science Award One Health Alliance

Interprofessional Education Subcommitee

Colorado State University is a participating institution in the Clinical and Translational Science Award One Health Alliance (COHA), which brings together veterinary schools and medical colleagues to advance the understanding of diseases shared by humans and animals and find solutions and treatments.

In 2021, a subcommittee on Interprofessional Education was formed with funding from a COHA pilot grant. Led in part by members of Colorado State University’s One Health Institute, the subcommittee includes ten institutions and focuses on aligning One Health with Interprofessional Education, research, and advocacy.

Interprofessional Education and One Health are two common and overlapping frameworks for teaching collaborative practice. These concepts describe frameworks in which multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together to deliver the highest quality of care across settings.

Research

The first prospective study from the subcommittee on Interprofessional Education was recently published in the Journal of One Health: The intersection of Interprofessional Education and One Health: A qualitative study in human and veterinary medical institutions

This study interviewed professionals from universities with both veterinary and human medical schools to explore barriers to Interprofessional Education, such as awareness, accessibility, and implementation beyond the classroom.

The research examined the competencies of Interprofessional Education and One Health, aiming to operationalize One Health into curricula through Interprofessional Education principles. By aligning these frameworks, the study highlights opportunities to incorporate One Health into educational practices and better prepare professionals to address health issues across human and animal medicine.

Meetings

The subcommittee has had abstracts and presentations accepted at multiple conferences. A notable
presentation was part of the Nexus Summit 2023 Seminar Showcase

The One Health Institute co-sponsored the second annual COHA Interprofessional Education and One Health meeting in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 14, 2024.

The meeting brought together scholars and practitioners from Interprofessional Education (IPE) and One Health, with the goal of including veterinary medicine in traditional interprofessional activities and expanding One Health education offerings to other health professions. CSU One Health Institute’s One Health/One Medicine Fellow, Claire Tucker, attended and facilitated a session at the meeting.
